Lucid Dream explores innovative ways to integrate work, living, and rest in modern urban environments. Addressing challenges like sleep deprivation, long commutes, and unequal resource access, the project reimagines underutilised spaces, such as a declining mall in central Shanghai, to create dual-purpose environments for restaurant workers.

Inspired by Beijing’s traditional Da Yuan compound model, the design merges residential and workplace functions to optimise urban living. Flexible modules with moving panels and doors adapt spaces between daytime business and nighttime homes, while minimalist residential elements maintain clarity and efficiency. Five open areas punctuate the layout, fostering better circulation and spatial rhythm.

By repurposing neglected urban areas, Lucid Dream provides a sustainable solution to the pressures of modern city life. It proposes a framework for balancing work and rest, offering a practical, adaptable approach to urban design in central locations.
